• All commercial drivers, and many others who drive large vehicles, are required to have a medical examination, repeated every 3 months to 2 years based on underlying health conditions. Mandated by federal law, these examinations clear drivers to operate commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and help ensure that they can manage the long hours, exhausting schedules, and stress of handling a commercial vehicle. The examination assesses general health, as well as mental and emotional fitness for the demands of professional driving.
• DOT Certified Medical Examiners are those who have gone through the training and certification needed to be recognized by the Department of Transportation as a medical professional who can carry out the exams on these drivers.

A DOT certification is required if a driver:

• – Operates a motor vehicle designed to carry more than 15 people.
• – Is paid to operate a motor vehicle designed to carry more than 8 people.
• – Operates a motor vehicle with a gross vehicle weight, gross vehicle weight rating, gross combination weight, or gross combination weight rating of over 10,000 pounds.
• – Transports hazardous materials that require the vehicle to be placarded.
